Welcome to Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers!
About Us
Established in 1987 and debuting our first performance in 1989, the Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers have a rich history of sharing our culture through dance. From prominent events like the Goodwill Games opening ceremonies in 1990 to the Gathering of Nations Powwow in New Mexico and international showcases in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Intertribal Powwow in Hilo, Hawaii, we continue to spread the spirit of Alutiiq traditions worldwide.
Our diverse group of dancers, spanning from toddlers to adults, gathers weekly to learn songs, create regalia, and organize fundraising activities. Supported by the Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak, the Native Village of Afognak, and the Woody Island Tribal Council, our mission since 1987 is to celebrate and honor our heritage through the music and movement.
Regalia
The regalia worn during performances are replicas of traditional clothing which is housed in museums all over the world. These dresses are aptly called the snow falling parka. Just a couple hundred years ago, the regalia we wear would have been made from bird skins, adorned with puffin beaks, and marine mammal intestine and esophagus. Our regalia is made by our members and many community members. We also wear replicas of beaded headdresses, and headdresses in a contemporary style.
Join us in celebrating our heritage and community.
